Oct 3: Day of German Unity

thumbnail

Every 3rd of October Germany celebrates German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) and it marks the anniversary of the nation’s unification of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Democratic Republic of Germany.

West reunited with East Germany!

Germans celebrate this national holiday with many celebrations throughout the country: speeches, concerts, fireworks etc., which also means many stores and businesses are closed.

Many remember the wall falling on November 9, 1989. Some of you may have even been there or have claimed a piece of The Berlin Wall for themselves. But the reunification is not celebrated on this date – November 9 – because historically speaking November 9th has been overshadowed by events that don’t deserve celebrating, such as the Nazi progroms of 1938.

Instead, the third of October 1990, is the date the Democratic Republic of Germany seized to exit. It is now the date we celebrate Germany coming together!
