Here are a few recommendations by our staff, listed by what they would eat if they had to chose from anything we’d ever offered on our menu:
Nina: Green Bean Soup, Cordon Bleu with vegetable medley and Spaetzle, Cherry Strudel or Plum Cake
Viki: any Chef’s Special Salad, Cheese or Gulasch Soup, Ragout, Jaeger Schnitzel
Jesus: Cream of Potato Soup or Chef’s Salad, Jaeger Schnitzel with pan-fried potatoes and vegetable medley, Erdinger Kristall Klar
Marina: Gulasch Soup, Tomato Mozzarella Salad, Beef Stroganoff with pan-fried potatoes and dumpling, Chocolate Soufflee and Strawberry Napoleon
Oxana: House Salad with house dressing, Cheese soup, Sauerbraten with Spaetzle and pan-fried potatoes, Soufflee/ Napoleon, Erdiger Kristallklar
Jason: Green Bean Soup, Gulasch with Red Cabbage and Spaetzle, Eclairs, Lemon Roll

A Little Gasthaus History
On December 18th, 1993, after months of remodeling, the Greipel Family, all born and raised in Germany, except the oldest daughter Simone (born in London, England), finally opened the “Gasthaus” at its present location.
Michael and Annemarie Greipel, together with their five children are all involved in the running of the restaurant. After graduating from college, three of the five children left the restaurant to pursue their own careers. Two of them have since returned to help manage the business.
Executive Chef Jean-Phillip Schmitt (born in Strasbourg, France, and raised on German and French cuisine) together with Sous-Chef Jason Malone, owner Michael and youngest son Nico, create authentic dishes from Old World recipes.
Annemarie, her daughter Simone, Nina and Viki, granddaughter Molly and friendly staff are responsible for taking care of the guests, many of them regulars.
Since opening in 1993, the menu has grown from a few items to a large selection. Everything is made from scratch, using only the finest and freshest ingredients. Michael handpicks all his meats, fruits and vegetables daily. Annemarie, together with her daughter, Nina, makes all the desserts daily from family recipes.
While most of the entrees are a la carte, we can try to accommodate special requests after a short consultation with the chefs.
Parties and take-out orders are welcomed.
The Gasthaus can seat approximately 70 people. The décor, which includes two chalets, is a mixture of family pictures and personal items from the Greipel‘s home in Germany and gifts from guests. A family member painted the two murals on the walls.
The female servers, several of them from Europe, wear traditional Dirndl dresses.
The whole restaurant is available for private parties or special occasions. There has even been a real wedding in one of the chalets. For many years NBC affiliate “Wave 3” has broadcast a live show from the restaurant.
The Gasthaus Team has taken part in cooking demonstrations at the “Gourmet Cottage“ and the “Home and Garden Show”. The Gasthaus consistently receives positive reviews from newspapers and magazines. The “Guide to the Best Restaurants in America” has named the Gasthaus “The Best German Restaurant in Louisville” for 2009 and 2010.People visit from all over America and the world, which the guest books confirm.
The whole Gasthaus Team, many of them having been there since “day one” take great pride in everything they do.
The Gasthaus is conveniently located on the corner of I-264 (Watterson Express Way), Brownsboro Road and Rudy Lane. Opening hours are for dinner only,
Tuesday-Saturday 6pm until 9:30pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
Reservations are highly recommended, especially for large parties and on weekends!

My wife and I intend to dine at your restaurant soon, for the first time. My question is is there a clothing store in Louisville that sells the original German made lederhosens and drindl dresses? I have seen some on the net for order but am interested to know if these items can be viewed and purchased locally. Regards, Paul Streble

We are not aware of any store locally, wouldn’t that be great? We get ours either taylormade or buy them in Germany. You can probably find a store that sells them online.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to get a pair of German made bunderhosen on Ebay, like new and also a dirndl made in Austria for my wife, on Ebay as well. Can’t wait to come in and taste your great food. My best friend lives near you and he tells me the food is great at Gasthaus. Will we be out of place wearing our German attire or is that reserved for Octoberfest? Thanks again. Paul

First time visiting tonight. My wife and I had a great time and we both enjoyed our entrees. Gasthaus is a hidden gem for German cuisine in Louisville. Oxi was our waitress, and she did a great job. Can’t wait for our next opportunity to explore more of the menu. Thank you!
